RETINAL DISEASES

RETINAL DISEASES

Retinal diseases are a group of heterogeneous conditions which include Age-related Macular Degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, and diabetic retinopathy. They can can affect any part of the retina, a thin layer of tissue on the inside back wall of the eye.

Numerous factors, such as oxidative stress, genetic diseases, light-induced damage, chemical insults, vascular defects or aging, have been suggested to contribute to the development of retinal degeneration. Progressive degeneration of the retinal neurons could result in severe deterioration of visual function and in due course, permanent visual loss(1).
